Art therapists are professionals trained in both art and therapy who use art to help people who experience illness, trauma, or challenges in living, and people who seek personal development. According to the American Art Therapy Association, through creating art and reflecting on the art processes, people can increase awareness of themselves and others, cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the lifeaffirming pleasures of making art.
