Art therapists are professionals trained in both art and therapy who use art to help people who experience illness, trauma, or challenges in living, and people who seek personal development. According to the American Art Therapy Association, through creating art and reflecting on the art processes, people can increase awareness of themselves and others, cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.
UW-Superior offers a major in Visual Arts with a concentration in Art Therapy. Students complete courses in art training, art therapy and psychology. This prepares them for careers as therapists in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other organizations.
Students can significantly enhance their career opportunities by completing a Master of Arts degree in Art Therapy through UW-Superior's Graduate Studies program. The master's program follows national standards and fulfills many of the educational and practical experiences required for certification by the American Art Therapy Association.
