Students take home honors in juried exhibit

Undergraduate and graduate students were recognized for their work display in the annual Visual Arts Capstone and Juried Exhibit.

Several University of Wisconsin-Superior undergraduate and graduate art students took home honors May 2 in judging for the university's annual Visual Arts Capstone and Juried Exhibit.

The exhibit is held each year by UW-Superior's Department of Visual Arts in Kruk Gallery on the UW-Superior campus. Artist Trish Ramsey, who teaches at Southeastern Louisiana University, was the guest judge of this year's exhibit.

Students earning awards were:

Best in Show - Catherine Pool of Shell Lake, Wis., for "Eve" done in mixed media. She is majoring in studio art and pursuing a bachelor of fine arts degree.

Second Place - Karlie Thomas of Superior for "Depth Perception" done in acylic. She is majoring in studio art and pursuing a bachelor of fine arts degree.

Third Place - Brianna Deterling of Poplar, Wis., for her stoneware piece titled "Button Vase." She is majoring in art education and pursuing a bachelor of fine arts degree.

Students earning Honorable Mention were:

  • Adam Frankiewicz of Spooner, Wis., for his watercolor titled "Rock Valley." He is majoring in biology and in visual arts with a concentration in studio art.

  • Nicholas Sunsdahl of Duluth for his untitled photograph. He is minoring in photography.

  • Emily Ward of Barnum, Minn., for "Lady and the Black Tornado" done in gouche and watercolor. She is majoring in visual arts with a concentration in art education.

Graduate students earning Honorable Mention were:

  • Breanna Foro of Duluth for her acrylic "The Dirty Life." She is pursuing a master of arts degree in art therapy.

  • Anndrea Ploeger of Iron River, Wis., for her yarn weaving "Diamond Jacket." She is pursuing a master of arts degree in art history.

  • Letisha Rice of Washburn, Wis., for her gouche work titled "Biology." She is pursuing a master of arts degree in art therapy.
