Biology and Earth Science - Biology
UW-Superior's versatile biology program provides a firm foundation in basic biological principles and enables students to pursue career goals through focuses on Ecology, Aquatic Biology and Fishery Science, Cell/Molecular Biology, Plant Sciences, Preprofessional Studies, and Secondary Education. The program also offers a "dual degree" option in forestry. Students can work closely with faculty in planning their academic programs, in pursuing classroom and lab work, and in research. The program emphasizes fieldwork and research.
Biology and Earth Science - Cell/Molecular Focus
UW-Superior's biology program provides a firm foundation in basic biological principles with an emphasis on fieldwork and research. The focus in Cell/Molecular Biology enables you to study basic life processes at the molecular level. Courses in this focus expose students to a variety of techniques and areas of study, and also provide opportunities for independent research. Students who pursue the Cell/Molecular Focus often go on to graduate, medical or professional schools, or work in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries.
Biology and Earth Science - Ecology, Aquatic Biology and Fishery Science Focus
UW-Superior's biology major offers a focus in Ecology, Aquatic Biology and Fishery Science. This is an ideal option for students interested in careers in aquatic biology, ecology, field biology, resource management or natural resource education. Faculty expertise, undergraduate research opportunities and the resources of the Lake Superior region contribute to the quality of this program.
Biology and Earth Science - Geography
UW-Superior offers minors in Applied Geographic Information Systems, Geography, and Geography for elementary or secondary teacher certification.
Geographic Information Systems is a computer-based technology and methodology for collecting, managing, analyzing, modeling, and presenting data for a wide range of applications. Scientists, business owners, planners, economists and government officials are increasingly relying on GIS for such diverse purposes as tracking the location of customers, managing wildlife habitats, organizing efficient delivery routes, deciding where to locate businesses, and tracing infectious diseases. All GIS students complete class projects using real-world data, often for local businesses or government agencies.
Geography has many specialized fields and exciting career opportunities. A geography minor can complement and enhance many majors, including those in business, science, education, communication, legal studies and all areas related to international study. The minor in geography for elementary and secondary certification prepares students to meet the growing demand for geography teachers across the country.
Biology and Earth Science - Geology
UW-Superior offers two options related to geology.
First, our Physical Environmental Science minor provides a strong background in geology, hydrology, chemistry and geographic information systems. This is a particularly good minor for students interested in areas such as hydrogeology and environmental remediation.
Second, we offer a Water Resource Management minor that enables you to study one year at Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minn., then complete your studies at UW-Superior. This is an excellent opportunity to combine a major in biology or chemistry with this 22-credit minor that includes courses on geology, chemistry and biology.
Biology and Earth Science - Plant Sciences Focus
Students interested in botany or other plant science careers can major in Biology with a Plant Sciences Focus. UW-Superior's biology program provides a firm foundation in basic biological principles with an emphasis on fieldwork and research. Northwestern Wisconsin is an excellent setting for studying forests, wetlands and other plant communities.
Our Dual Degree program in forestry enables a student to attend UW-Superior for three years and then attend Michigan Technological University in Houghton for up to two years. Upon completing the program, the student receives a bachelor's degree with a major in biology from UW-Superior and a bachelor's degree with a major in forestry from MTU.
