UW-Superior's Teacher Education Department offers an elementary education major that prepares students to obtain certification to teach pre-kindergarten through sixth grade (ages birth through age 8) or first through seventh grade (ages 6 through age 12/13).
Our Teacher Education Department offers a challenging curriculum, small class sizes, intensive interaction with faculty, and many opportunities to gain experience by working with children on campus, in classrooms, and as a student teacher or teaching intern. The program prepares students for licensure in Wisconsin, and the degree is acceptable in many other states.
UW-Superior has more than 100 years of experience in training teachers. Our Teacher Education Department enjoys an excellent reputation for quality and innovation. Our graduates are highly regarded by their employers, and many have won teaching awards at the district, state and national levels.
After earning your bachelor's degree, you can continue your education and professional growth throughout your career with our high-quality graduate programs in reading, instruction, special education, counseling and educational administration.
The elementary education program won the 2005 and 2006 Promising Practice Wisconsin PK-16 Leadership Council which stated the following: "This program provides an authentic school setting in which university students can apply understanding of research based reading techniques and practical implementation suggestions in an atmosphere of support and continuous feedback."
Major: Teacher Education - Elementary Education
Each Elementary Education major must also complete an additional teaching major or one of the following minors:
Teaching jobs are expected to open across the country as older teachers retire. Teachers also can move into other educational positions such as school librarians, reading specialists, curriculum specialists, guidance counselors or various other related positions in Wisconsin's Technical Colleges or university systems. Administrative positions are another career option, usually after several years of experience and completion of at least one graduate degree.
