UW-Superior Mock Trial Team Wins Honorable Mention and Chance of National Competition 2014

Black Squad 1001 of UW-Superior's Mock Trial team won a hard fought 5 wins, 3 loss record at the St. Paul Regional Tournament this past weekend at Macalester College. They earned an Honorable Mention finish and the chance to be invited to compete at the Opening Round Championship Series tournaments to be held at eight venues around the country in March. The invitation may be received as early as Sunday, February 23,and Black Squad is second on the national open bid list at this time. Black Squad members include Emmanuel Tucker II, Taylor Tengwall, Andrew Hanson, Cody Chaffee, Yer Vang, Cassandra Burr and Allison Marble.

Gold Squad 1002 had a heart-breaking weekend with tough rounds against some of the best teams at the regional tournament and ended their season. Gold Squad members include Brandon Engblom, Nicole Stodola, Meagan Guptill, Jessica McLeod, Jessica Schubring, Kyle Johnson, Matthew Munkelwitz, and Turner Tomczyk.

The regional field included multiple teams from UM-Twin Cities, Wheaton College, Macalester College, Bemidji State University, UM-Morris, University of Chicago, St. Benedict/St. John's University, UMD, Carthage College, UW-LaCrosse, University of St. Thomas, St.Olaf College and Hamline University.

UW-Superior had four individual award winners: Outstanding Witness awards for Cody Chaffee and Andrew Hanson as well as Outstanding Attorney awards for Taylor Tengwall and Cassandra Foltz Burr.

At this point, Black Squad waits to hear about their national bid and then the team will know if they proceed to national level competition at ORCS.

The team is coached by Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo, Mark Fruehauf, Julie Benfield and Mary Russell.
