Mock Trial Partners with Theatre to Improve Learning Skills

Associate Professor Cathy Fank (Theater, Communicating Arts) spent over an hour with the 2013-2014 Mock Trial team building enhanced performance skills. Fank worked with over twenty Mockers on stretching, breathing, voice projection and witness characterization skills. This learning collaboration helps those studying the law to be better at performance based learning. Fank has volunteered for three years to work with the Mock Trial team to build their skills. Her key advice: "don't be so cerebral---feelings and emotions matter in being credible." She suggested that the students write witness autobiographies filled with much background context and detail. Working with the nuances of the moment is also a critical skill. The Mockers got a taste of improvisational theater as Fank created an on the spot scenario. Kyle Johnson, an experienced Mocker, worked through the scene with her. Improv is coming to UW-Superior and the Mockers were among the first to experiment and see its value. This is an example of ongoing interdisciplinary work that occurs at UW-Superior where different discipline experts work across programs to enhance student learning.
