Mock Trial team places 3rd in tournament

Mock Trial team places 3rd in tournament

A University of Wisconsin-Superior Mock Trial team placed third in the St. Thomas Hatting Invitational Tournament held Jan. 22-23 at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

UW-Superior's Black Team earned five wins, two losses and a tie to earn its third-place showing. The team was top-seeded entering the final round of competition and narrowly lost two ballots to another team. The judging panel included Judge Edward Toussaint from the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Dr. Steve Hatting, long-time mock trial coach and experienced judge at St. Thomas. UW-Superior's Gold Team placed 14th in the tournament with a 3-5 record.

Mock Trial is an academic forensic activity that teaches students how to analyze the law and facts of a case, and to argue and present cases in a trial court. Many of the participating students are majoring in UW-Superior's Legal Studies or Criminal Justice programs. UW-Superior belongs to the American Mock Trial Association and is one of more than 350 universities in the country that take part in mock trial competition.

Cassy Foltz of Detroit Lakes, Minn., won an Outstanding Attorney individual award. Josh Weir of Kelsey, Minn., won an Outstanding Witness individual award. 

 The following students were nominated for Outstanding Attorney recognition throughout four rounds of competition:  Mark Wick, Cassy Foltz, Taylor Tengwall, Josh Weir, Katllyn Shipley, Brandt Devich, and Alicia Kline.

Along with Foltz and eir, Mock Trial team members include Eric Albertson of Duluth; Jeff Anderson of Frederic, Wis.; Ludmila Ciubaciuc of Moldava; Kayannda Davis of Hudson, Wis., Brandt Devich of Buhl, Minn.; Jordin Gegare of De Pere, Wis.; Alicia Kline of Reedsburg, Wis.; Daniel Mason of Madison, Wis.; Jan O'Malley of Superior, Shannon Bowen, Katlyn Shipley of Duluth; Taylor Tengwall of Sandstone, Minn.; Mark Wick of Foxboro, Wis.; and Tianyi Xie of Bethesda, Md. 

The team is coached and advised by Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo, professor of Legal Studies at UW-Superior, and Tracy Schramm, a partner in Bateman and Schramm law firm in Duluth and an alumna of UW-Superior and its mock trial program.  

Competitors in the St. Thomas tournament included multiple teams from University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, UM-Morris, UM-Duluth, Macalester College, St. John's-St. Benedict's, Hamline University, University of St. Thomas, Grinnell University, and University of Colorado-Boulder.  It was the largest field of competition including Upper Midwest schools that the UW-Superior teams are likely to face before regional tournaments begin.

The UW-Superior Mock Trial teams travel this weekend to the Loras Invitational Tournament in Dubuque, Iowa, to continue the pre-regional invitational season.  UW-Superior hosts the 2011 Upper Midwest Durst Memorial Mock Trial Regional Tournament Feb. 11-13.
