Students Create Role Plays Used in Advanced Mediation Practicum Course

Legal Studies is proud to announce that students are now part of collaborative learning work with role plays. Jeff Anderson was the first student author to have his financial divorce role play used as an active learning tool in the MEDI 488 Practicum course. Anderson wrote a detailed role play for a hypothetical divorcing couple that involved detailed financial statements. Student mediators had to analyze the complex facts and facilitate the mediation between the divorcing couple. Fourteen students (in four different mediations) were involved in the first running of Anderson's role play during the August 1, 2013 class session.

MEDI 488 is the final practicum course in a nine credit CEE Mediation/Conflict Resolution Certificate program in Summer 2013. Mediation is a voluntary process where parties receive third party neutral assistance in understanding and resolving their conflicts.

Tyesha Nelson, another class member, also authored a role play involving a complex divorce that was selected as the back-up role play for this class.

This is another example of CEE and Legal Studies programs continuing commitment to active teaching and learning. MEDI 488 is taught by Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo and Justin Terch. The program is coordinated by Lisa Mattsson of Continuing Education & Extension.
