UW-Superior Mock Trial Black and Gold squads had a winning weekend this past Friday-Saturday at the National Mock Trial Invitational hosted by Loras College in Dubuque IA.

UW-Superior Mock Trial Black and Gold squads had a winning weekend this past Friday-Saturday at the National Mock Trial Invitational hosted by Loras College in Dubuque IA. Black Squad earned a 6 wins-2 loss record to finish in 8th Place with an Honorable Mention. Gold Squad finished with five wins-3 losses to finish in the top quarter of the field. Loras hosts one of the largest Midwest invitationals all year with a 50 team field featuring Mock Trial powerhouse universities like University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Wheaton College, Macalester College, Morningside College, Luther College, Drake University, Loyola University-Chicago, Cornell College, Creighton University, North Central College, DePaul University, University of Central Missouri, Bradley University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Loras College, St. Ambrose University, Carthage College, Benedictine University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Central College, Truman State University, University of Kansas, Western Michigan University, University of Iowa, Indiana University, University of Missouri-Columbia, and Hamline University. Both teams finished in the top 35% of the tournament.

Black Squad includes Emmanuel Tucker II, Taylor Tengwall, Andy Hanson, Cody Chaffee, Allison Marble, Yer Vang and Cassy Foltz Burr.

Gold Squad includes Brandon Engblom, Jessica Schubring, Turner Tomczyk, Jessa McLeod, Kyle Johnson, Matt Munkelwitz, Nicole Stodola, Meagan Guptill.

Tucker, Tengwall, Hanson, Chaffee, Marble and Engblom serve as captains for the Mock Trial team.

Cassandra Foltz Burr was the top Outstanding Attorney with a perfect score of 20 points out of over 250 Mocker attorneys present. Kyle Johnson won Outstanding Witness award honors out of the over 250 Mocker witnesses competing.

UW-Superior Black Squad (1001) was honored with the Mary Lynn Neuhaus Civility Award at the tournament for their decorum, professionalism and spirit of civility. This is a great honor in the Midwest and is voted on by other Mockers for the team that exhibits these qualities.

The team has two weeks to practice intensely for their Upper Midwest Regionals the weekend of February 14-16 at Macalester College in St. Paul. The top eight teams from this regional will join other award winning teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan and Illinois for the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCS) in Waukegon, IL on March 14-16. The best six teams from ORCS will travel to Orlando, FL in April for the Mock Trial National Tournament with the top 48 teams in the nation.

The team is coached by Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo (Legal Studies), Mark Fruehauf, Mary Russell and Julie Benfield. Fruehauf, Russell and Benfield are practicing attorneys in the region. Margaret Johnson of Legal Studies provides administrative logistics support for the team. Cathy Fank of Theater provides additional coaching assistance on witness development.

This 2013-2014 UW-Superior Mock Trial team is now officially the "winningest team" in our university Mock Trial history.
