Dr. Bill Simpson is an Associate Professor and Director of the Kessler Exercise Physiology Laboratory. He joined the department in August, 2005. Previous academic appointments include Shenandoah University [Winchester, VA], College of St. Scholastica [Duluth, MN] and University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point [Stevens Point, WI]. Previous non academic work includes Staff Kinesiotherapist at the Phoenix [AZ] and St. Louis [MO] VA Medical Centers as well as Head Athletic Trainer at Southeastern Massachusetts University and was a Physical Director at the Talbot County [MD] YMCA.
Dr. Simpson received his BS degree in Physical Education / YMCA from Springfield [MA] College, Ed.M from Boston University and his PhD from the University of Toledo [OH] in Exercise Physiology / Public Health. Also, Dr. Simpson attended summer sessions at the University of Michigan School of Public Health taking courses in epidemiology and biostatistics. He is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a clinical exercise specialist and currently is the Chair of the Credentialing Board [CCRB] and member of the executive council that oversees this credential. He has also served both the Mid-West and Northland ACSM chapters as a board member at large.
His research interests include the health profiles of college age students, coronary risk factors and their relationship to lifestyle and personality type and issues surrounding female athletes and the female athlete triad. He has numerous publications and has received funding from The Whiteside Institute [St. Lukes Hospital/UMD School of Medicine] as well as numerous internal small grants. Currently he serves on the editorial board of ACSM's Health and Fitness Journal and routinely reviews manuscripts for numerous journals including Metabolism, British Journal of Sports Medicine and European Journal of Applied Physiology. He recently completed a book chapter for a new textbook entitled Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine for Primary Care.
Dr. Simpson has been active with numerous boards and committees on and off campus. He currently serves UWS as a faculty senator and a member of the Institutional Review Board for protection of human subjects. Aside from the American College of Sports Medicine he has served in varying capacities with American Lung Association, American Heart Association, St Louis County Smoke Free Coalition, PFLAG and Planned Parenthood. He as also received recognition from ALA, AHA at the regional and national level.
He resides in Duluth with his spouse Karie, and two children, Courtney and Zoe. Hobbies include long distance running [has completed 3 marathons and is training for a couple of half marathons], reading, cooking and cycling.
