Richard Robbins serves UWS as the Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. A versatile conductor and pedagogue, Dr. Robbins previously directed choirs at Houston's prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he was named the 2013 Teacher of the Year and led his ensembles in performances and masterclasses with a wide range of artists, including the Houston Symphony; the Grammy-award winning vocal ensemble, Chanticleer; and the Grammy-nominated pop group, Paramore. In addition to his work teaching public school vocal music at HSPVA and South Houston High School, Dr. Robbins directed the Concert Women's Chorus and University Men's Chorus at the University of Houston, and he holds degrees from Florida State University (B.M.E.) and the University of Houston (M.M., D.M.A.). His choirs have earned awards at the San Antonio Madrigal Festival and the Texas Early Music Festival, and he travels extensively as a clinician, adjudicator, and director for choral festivals and honor choirs across the country.

An experienced conductor of the choral-orchestral and musical theater repertoire, Dr. Robbins has prepared choruses for the Houston Ballet and for 53 performances with the Houston Symphony, in addition to serving as assistant director of the Houston Symphony Chorus, founding director of the St. Paul's Choral Scholars, festival conductor for the American Federation Pueri Cantores, opera chorus director for the Moores Opera Center, and choral conductor and department head for the American Festival for the Arts. He has prepared choruses for major symphony orchestra conductors, including Christoph Eschenbach, Ermanno Florio, Hans Graf, Joan Glover, Bernard Labadie, Klaus Peter Flor, Michael Krajewski, Stephen Cleobury, Robert Franz, and others. In the fall of 2014 he will serve as the guest chorus director for the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Robbins' scholarly research interests include the Italian sacred choral music of the early Baroque; his urtext editions are published by Prima la Music Press, and his expertise in the liturgies of Vespers and Compline were a hallmark of his work as a church musician in Houston. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Choral Directors Association, and a past Executive Board member of the Southwestern Division ACDA.
