Music Department - UW-Superior

Internationally recognized cellist and music educator Christina Roytz has been fortunate enough to combine her passion for classical music and performance with the professional opportunities to play at venues around the world and share her love of the fine arts with the younger generation of musicians. Currently, Ms. Roytz is a Senior Lecturer in Cello at the University of Wisconsin Superior, Instructor of Music at Mesabi Range Technical and Community College, Secretary/Treasurer of the Duluth Musicians Union, and Principal Cellist of the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra. Prior to completing her Master's Degree in Music Performance at Carnegie Mellon University where she was the recipient of a full-tuition fellowship, she was a cellist in the Amman Symphony Orchestra and concurrently was a faculty member in the Fine and Performing Arts Department at King's Academy, a boarding school located in Amman, Jordan which has quickly gained international acclaim as one of the most elite college preparatory schools in the Middle East. From 2007 to 2012, she spent her summers as a faculty member of the Performing Arts Institute at Wyoming Seminary where she was both a guest artist and Head Music Librarian.

In 2010, Ms. Roytz was the featured soloist in the premiere of Charles Loos's In C (Minor) for cello and piano, a work originally performed in Carmel, California and composed for a soprano saxophone (George Young), solo cello (Stephen Geber), and cello choir, of which Ms. Roytz was a member. She has studied under Bryan Dumm, Anne Martindale-Williams, Stephen Geber, David Primo, and David Alan Harrel. As a winner of numerous concerto competitions and as an invited guest soloist, Ms. Roytz has performed numerous solo works in Belgium, Jordan, and America; and notes Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, Bruch's Kol Nidrei, and Faure's Elegie as some of her most memorable. From 2006-2008, Ms. Roytz was the cellist in the New Century String Quartet and the Amphion String Quartet and, in 2008, was featured live on the National Public Radio affiliate out of Toledo, Ohio. Prior to moving to Amman, Ms. Roytz was a member of various performance groups, including the Ashland, Mansfield, and Lima symphonies and was a substitute cellist in the Toledo Symphony. Her mainstream experience includes studio work with both American and international singers, an on-screen performance in a music video for the American alternative-metal band, Mushroomhead, and serving as the studio cellist for the independent film The Piano Story, directed by Andrew Batistia.

Since childhood, Christina Roytz has been an avid equestrian and competed throughout the Eastern United States in the hunter and jumper divisions. When not teaching, practicing or performing, she can be found in the kitchen tasting and trying new recipes or outside exploring her new surroundings in the Northland.
