Dr. Lois Veenhoven Guderian, UWS Associate Professor of Music and Music Education Coordinator: PhD in Music Education from Northwestern University, Evanston, Il; MM Western Michigan University; BM degrees in Piano Performance and Music Education, Major in Voice, Hope College, Holland, MI. Composer; author; choral conductor, clinician and designer of educational programs.

 

Teaching and Publications: Having taught choral, general and instrumental music in the schools levels pre-K through university, and private piano and voice for more than 30 years, Lois' teaching responsibilities at UWS include music education methods courses; supervision of student teachers and fieldwork; interdisciplinary/integrated methods courses for elementary education degree programs; general and aesthetic experience music courses, and distance learning courses in music education. Lois is the author of several books for music education, numerous journal articles and chapter contributions on various topics in arts and music education and has been/is featured as an author, researcher, composer, choral mentor and general music specialist in website and hard copy publications of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Lois serves as Research Chair for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association and has served as an Online Mentor and Adjudicator in Music Composition for the NAfME for several years including North Central Division Chair in Music Composition from 2006 -2012. Awards and recognition for her work in music education from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois include: the Music Educator Fellowship (2000), the Music Educator PhD Fellowship (2001-2004) and the Emily Boettcher and J. Yule Bogue Scholarship for excellence in musical and academic work (2003). From the University of Wisconsin system and University of Wisconsin-Superior, awards include the Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars SoTL Research Fellowship (2012-2013) and the UWS Distinguished Service Award in Academic Service Learning for her numerous designs and implementation of AS-L programs for schools and communities (2013). Featured in several hard copy and online articles by the National Association for Music Education, Lois was one of five "very experienced" music educators interviewed from the US in an article on what successful teachers love about teaching music (Moore, P. (2011). Music from the Heart. Teaching Music: Journal of the National Association for Music Education, 2011, 18(4), 38-43.

 

Clinician/Presenter: Lois' work and research in music composition in the schools is often solicited and/or accepted for publication and workshop presentations.Presentations for organizations include The American Alliance for Theatre in Education; The National Association for Music Education; The National Association for Gifted Children; Desire to Learn National Conference for Distance Learning; the Illinois State Music Teachers Association; the Wisconsin State Music Educators Association; the Minnesota Music Educators Association; the University of Wisconsin Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning conferences - Artists Training Artists, the President's Summit Conferences; the University of Wisconsin System OPID Spring Conferences; Northwestern University's 25th anniversary conference for the Center for the Study of Education and the Musical Experience; a series of professional development workshops in music education for UW-Superior and workshops for community organizations.

 

Versatile Composer: Lois accepts commissioned projects for commercial, educational and concert uses. Her songs, piano pieces, instrumental and choral pieces and musicals span a variety of levels of complexity, style, and instrumentation from children's songs to community theatre musicals, chamber pieces and works for full orchestra and double choirs. Her comprehensive recorder texts, Playing the Soprano Recorder for School, Community and the Private Studio and Playing the Soprano Recorder for Church, School, Community and the Private Studio include 77 original and arranged ensemble pieces. Publishers of Lois' work include MENC- Rowman & Littlefield; The National Association for Music Education; Transcontinental Music Publications; Sage Publications; Corwin Press; Oxford University Press; NAC of N. America; NAC International; Alfred Publishing; LoVeeg Publishing, the Illinois State Music Teachers Association; The Wisconsin State Music Teachers Association; The Illinois Gifted Children's Association

 

Service: Lois continues to devote many hours weekly to community service in a number of ways: designing, developing and implementing programs for schools and communities; as board of director, officer or administrator for various organizations; and as a church musician in numerous roles. Her love for people and belief that all human beings are born with creative and musical potential are the underlying forces that fuel her dedication for research, writing and educating of pre-service educators for quality music education for all children and youth in schools.
