Melanie Sever is an active freelance musician and a substitute with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra and has performed with the United States Marine Corps Bands. She is a member of the UWS faculty woodwind quintet and a founding member of the Duluth area trio Duluthree.
Ms. Sever has taught flute at UWS since the Fall of 2010. She has twenty-five years of private studio teaching experience as well as being on staff for flute clinics, public school programs and summer camps. She was on the faculty of the Northshore Summer Music Experience camp at the University of Minnesota in 2009 and 2010 and of the Northland Youth Music Program in Superior in 2011 as well as the section coach for the 2009 MMEA All-State Band. As a licensed K-12 Instrumental and Classroom music educator in Minnesota and Wisconsin, she is a frequent substitute teacher in area public and private schools.
As an avid follower of the flute industry and flute making in general, Ms. Sever's interests have resulted in establishing and building relationships with flute and head joint makers from around the world. Her research-based article, "Head Hunting", has appeared in Fluit (Netherlands), Flote Aktuell (Germany), and www.flutefocus.com. The article provides essential information needed by flutists who are looking for a new head joint for their flute. She has been invited to lecture on this topic at the 2010 Adams Flute Festival in the Netherlands, the 2011 National Flute Association Annual Convention in Charlotte, NC and the 2012 British Flute Society Convention in Manchester, England.
BA, St. Olaf College; MM, University of MN-Duluth; Post-baccalaureate K-12 Instrumental Music Teaching Licensure, University of MN-Duluth. See www.melaniesever.com for additional information.
