Dr. Norma Stevlingson is originally from Boise, Idaho, where she began her organ studies with C. Griffith Bratt at St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, then at Boise Junior College. She attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and holds the degrees Bachelor of Music and Master of Music cum laude from the University of Michigan, where she studied organ with Robert Glasgow. She received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas in Denton where she studied organ with Charles S. Brown and harpsichord with both Brown and Dale Peters. She studied for two years in Paris, France, with internationally renowned concert and recording organist, Marie Claire Alain as Mme. Alain's first full-time American student. She also studied at the Summer Academy for Organists in Haarlem, Holland, where she participated in organ classes with Mme. Alain, Anton Heiller, and Luigi Tagliavini, and harpsichord classes with Gustav Leonhardt.

Dr. Stevlingson won first prize at the American Guild of Organists (AGO) Northwest Regional Competition in Boise, Idaho, and took second prize at the Fifth International Organ Playing Competition at St. Albans, England, which included a contract for a broadcast recital on the BBC. She has also been heard on classical radio in this country, including Public Radio Station KERA in Dallas and National Public Radio's "Pipedreams."

Dr. Stevlingson has performed solo recitals in the United States and Europe, and is often in demand as a lecturer for AGO functions and other events on both a regional and national level, as an adjudicator for organ competitions, and as a consultant in organ building projects. In addition, she has held several positions as organist or organist/choir director for churches throughout her career.

She judged the National Organ Competition and was a featured recitalist for the National Convention of the Music Teachers National Association in Chicago, and both judged and performed for the AGO Region VI Convention in Milwaukee. She was also invited as a featured recitalist and a judge at the AGO Region VI Convention held in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Dr. Stevlingson was a guest speaker, one of only three Americans, at the International Versailles Colloquium at the Chateau of Versailles, France. She was a guest speaker, substituting for Marie-Claire Alain (with only nine days notice) at the Organ Dedication Conference at the University of Kansas, and she was among the national figures to present a session at the American Guild of Organists National Conference on Organ Pedagogy, held in Fort Collins, Colorado, on the topic of turn-of-the-century (19th to 20th century) French organ composers. She has given workshops on the music of French composer Jehan Alain for the New York City Chapter of the AGO, the Dallas (TX) Chapter of the AGO, and the San Anselmo (CA) Conference on Alain. She was a featured speaker, giving lectures on Jehan Alain all three days of the 39th Annual Conference on Organ Music at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and was invited back for their 41st Conference. Most recently (November 2005) she was one of the presenters, including Marie-Claire Alain, to be invited to participate in the Festival Jehan Alain at Columbus State University, Georgia, where she spoke about Alain's choral, vocal and instrumental music.

Working in concert with Marie-Claire Alain, she translated Mme. Alain's book on the organ music of Jehan Alain. Dr. Stevlingson's English version was published by Leduc, Paris, in December, 2003.

Students of Dr. Stevlingson have been sought after and accepted by such outstanding graduate schools as the University of Michigan, the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Florida State University, the University of Notre Dame, the Eastman School of Music, and Southern Methodist University (a harpsichord performance student). Several of her students hold important church or teaching positions around the country, perform in concerts here and abroad, and one is under management as an international concert organist. The harpsichord student mentioned above holds a university faculty position in harpsichord and theory.

At UW-Superior Dr. Stevlingson has received the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the UW-Superior Award for Scholarly Activity. In addition to organ and harpsichord, she teaches Freshman Theory, Music History, Counterpoint, and Form and Analysis. She is a member of the American Guild of Organists (past officer of the Arrowhead Chapter), the American Musicological Society, Sigma Alph Iota National Music Fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honorary, and is a Nationally Certified Teacher of the Music Teachers' National Association.
