Audition Information

The UWS choral program is open to all students from the university, both music majors and non-music majors. Placement in a choir is by audition. Auditions are held during the Welcome Week and during the first week of the fall semester in the Holden Fine Arts Center. Students may sign up for an audition time at Dr. Robbins' office, Holden 1104. For information on spring auditions, please contact Dr. Robbins directly.

What to Expect

Choral auditions will include the following:

  • Brief vocalizing - scales and other exercises to test range and your vocal sound
  • Sing a brief, unaccompanied melody (America the Beautiful or a hymn tune - words provided). Voice majors should bring a prepared solo.
  • Tonal memory (sing back brief melodic passages)
  • Rhythmic exercise - clap or sing rhythmic patterns in common meters
  • Sight reading - both rhythms and pitches (on words, solfege, numbers - any system of your choice. The sight-reading will be tailored to your experience level)

Auditions are brief (6-10 minutes). Prior choral experience is helpful, but not required. A great attitude and a willingness to learn are required!

The membership of A Cappella Choir and Chamber Choir is open to all students, regardless of major. Chamber Choir students are generally also enrolled in the A Cappella Choir.

For specific questions regarding the audition, please contact Dr. Robbins at rrobbins@uwsuper.edu.
