UW-Superior Symphonic Band

Three UW-Superior music ensembles present A Celebration of Conductors, Composers and World Premieres at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in Thorpe Langley Auditorium on the UW-Superior campus.

Under the direction of Dr. Pamela Bowen Bustos, the Symphonic Band, Chamber Winds and Brass Quintet perform with special guest conductor John W. Paulson and student conductors Karyn Pederson and Sara Broshofske.

Paulson is the founder and chief executive officer of MakeMusic Inc., the publicly held company that develops and markets Finale and SmartMusic. A published composer and arranger, he continues to be active as a music clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor.

Paulson will conduct the premiere of "Merengue."The original work captures the irresistible charm and vitality of the traditional dance music of the Dominican Republic.

He also will conduct "Psalm," a work that celebrates traditional aspects of traditional sacred Western music, including moments of solemn prayerful moments contrasted with celebratory shouts of praise. 

In addition, Broshofske will premiere her "Cause Effect."  Broshofske,of Ogilvie, Minn., is a senior pursuing a bachelor in music degree. She studies clarinet and conducting with Bustos and composition with Dr. Greg Kehl Moore.She plans to pursue a masters degree in music composition upon graduation.

Pederson will conduct "Handel in the Strand,"composed by Australian composer Percy Grainger. Pederson,of Duluth, is pursuing a bachelor in instrumental music education. She studies bassoon with Brad Bombardier and conducting with Bustos. She plans to pursue a teaching position as a middle or high school band director in the public schools.

Admissions is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.
