UW-Superior's voice faculty is in the spotlight Nov. 17 when the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra performs Felix Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah" in Symphony Hall at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
Baritone Dr. Jeffrey Madison, lecturer at UW-Superior, sings the role of Elijah in the 90-minute performance that depicts the life of the Biblical prophet. Dr. Vicki Fingalson, voice and opera instructor, performs the soprano role.
Dr. Matthew Faerber, choral director at UW-Superior, conducts the DSSO Chorus in the performance.
"It is one of the greatest oratorios ever written," Fingalson said. "It's much like an opera in that there are difference characters and it tells different stories in the life of Elijah."
Fingalson describes the Mendelssohn piece as "gorgeous and exciting" for both the singers and the orchestra, which also includes several UW-Superior faculty members. Fingalson and Madison, veterans of numerous operas, are eagerly anticipating the performance.
"This is the first time we've done the entire piece," she said. "We've sung bits of it before, but we've never sung the oratorio in its entirety until this weekend."
