Deborah Augsburger received her B.A. in History from Earlham College, and her Ph.D. in Anthropology (Linguistic/Cultural) from the University of Pennsylvania. Her dissertation research was on language socialization, identity and cultural politics in a Zapotec-Spanish bilingual community in Oaxaca, Mexico.
In addition to her ongoing interest in efforts to preserve indigenous languages, and changing identities in Isthmus Zapotec communities of Oaxaca, she is committed to engaging students in hands-on research in local communities.
In the spring of 2012 she is teaching a collaborative research course studying "spaghetti dinners" - fundraising benefits for individuals - in the Twin Ports area.
