Anthropology is the study of human origins, race, prehistory and language. UW-Superior offers a minor in anthropology that inquires into the nature and meaning of cultures. Students examine a variety of cultures, including African, Asian, Middle Eastern and Native American.
Broad Field Social Studies is a comprehensive liberal arts major. It is open to everyone, but generally is used by students planning to pursue a career in teaching social studies at the Early Adolescence-Adolescence (EA-A) Level. It includes course work in Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Students who plan to become teachers must also complete the Wisconsin teacher certification requirements through the university’s Teacher Education Department.
Global Studies at UW-Superior offers a ”window on the world” and will strengthen your global awareness. Students will gain knowledge, experience and skills for global citizenship. It’s an opportunity to explore interests in various academic paths, including study abroad, foreign language, and issue-specific study. Students are encouraged to consider multiple perspectives and ideas and to advance their critical thinking skills.
UW-Superior’s history program offers a distinctive global focus available at few universities. By examining the struggles and triumphs of people around the world, students learn how their experiences shape our own. The program emphasizes critical thinking, analysis and communication as keys to finding meaning in the past and its relationship to the future. All students complete a capstone project in historical research or writing.
Does God exist? Are we human beings nothing more than complex material objects or do we have a non-material soul that could survive the death of the body? Do we have free will or is everything we think, say and do the inevitable effect of preceding causes? Could there be a conscious robot? Could my whole life have been a dream or virtual reality? What makes something morally right or wrong and why should I do what is right? These are philosophical questions. Human beings have asked themselves such questions for thousands of years. The discipline of philosophy is ancient. Its questions are central to who we are. Philosophy seeks to think critically about fundamental concepts and about questions of value. It stands at the core of the liberal arts and the university tradition. The study of philosophy illuminates the ruling ideas of our age, calling them into question and freeing the individual mind from narrow preconceptions.
Active citizenship is the foundation of the Political Science program at UWS. We offer courses that are designed to not only create informed students, but also students who can study the roots of problems, formulate creative solutions to existing local, state, national and international problems, and develop advocacy strategies that ultimately address and solve these problems once and for all. We are committed to your education not only in the classroom, but also by developing various activities such as internships, student activities such as Model United Nations, and through various student organizations such as International Peace Studies Association and Political Science Association.
UW-Superior’s sociology program offers students not just a fixed base of current knowledge, but the insight to identify major questions and the ability to pursue meaningful answers. Sociology studies all aspects of human society, including the ever-pressing issues of social, racial and sexual inequality. The program prepares students to understand and take responsibility for the social – the world structured by institutions, made meaningful through culture and lived in our actions.
The Women’s and Gender Studies program provides students with resources and opportunities to explore issues of gender and gender inequalities. The mission of the program is to raise awareness and to transform the university and the community through teaching, learning, and social action.
A minor in Women’s and Gender Studies is a valuable addition to any major. In our global, multicultural world, employers seek people who are aware and informed about current issues of gender and sexual diversity.
