The Women's and Gender Studies program provides students with resources and opportunities to explore issues of gender and gender inequalities. The mission of the program is to raise awareness and to transform the university and the community through teaching, learning, and social action.

Women's and Gender Studies

• A 21-credit minor, established in 1976 as Women's Studies, this unique, interdisciplinary program features courses and teachers from a broad range of academic fields.
• Women's and Gender Studies co-sponsors programs and events with Gender Equity Programs. A new Gender Equity Center in the Swenson Academic Building will provide informational resources and serve as a place for students of all genders and sexual identities to meet, talk and study.
• The Women's and Gender Studies Program sponsors speakers and events throughout the year.
• An annual essay contest provides prizes and a public reception and reading for students writing on Women's and Gender Studies topics.

Ashley Bennett works as a Senior Development Associate, raising funds for the Center for Victims of Torture in Minneapolis. She writes, "What I appreciate most about the Women and Gender Studies curriculum is how diverse the options are. The ability to get a perspective from Africa to Asia and everywhere in between adds to the appeal of this minor."

Paul Winterscheidt, Police Officer for the City of Superior, says, "the Women's Studies courses I completed at UW-Superior have benefitted me in my career. Gender issues are a big part of my job, and my experience at UW-Superior gave me a better appreciation for the issues women face in the criminal justice system." Paul was awarded the Superior Police Department's Distinguished Service award in 2010.

Jacci Rivard has worked for the Girl Scouts in various capacities, most recently as Pathways Director (Program Director) for the Girl Scouts in Greater Iowa. She is now a graduate research assistant in the Higher Education and Student Leadership Master's Program at Western Michigan University.
