UW-Superior's Teacher Education Department offers an elementary education major that prepares students to obtain certification to teach pre-kindergarten through sixth grade or first through eighth grade.

Our Teacher Education Department offers a challenging curriculum, small class sizes, intensive interaction with faculty, and many opportunities to gain experience by working with children on campus, in classrooms, and as a student teacher or teaching intern. The program prepares students for licensure in Wisconsin, and the degree is acceptable in many other states.

UW-Superior has more than 100 years of experience in training teachers. Our Teacher Education Department enjoys an excellent reputation for quality and innovation. Our graduates are highly regarded by their employers, and many have won teaching awards at the district, state and national levels.

Each Elementary Education major must also complete an additional teaching major or one of the following minors:

• Adaptive education/special education
• Early childhood  
• Geography
• German
• Health education
• Library science
• Mathematics
• Reading/language arts
• Science, social studies
• Spanish

Course descriptions

Program features:

• Students begin working with children early in their academic careers and have many opportunities to observe, tutor, and teach small and large groups before their student teaching experience.
   
• Students work closely with faculty members, all of whom have public school teaching experience.
   
• Each student has an academic advisor to offer guidance in selecting courses and choosing a minor or second major.
   
• Many UW-Superior scholarships are available for teacher education students.
   
• The COPE Center, located in McCaskill Hall, is an area where Teacher Education students can relax, study, share experiences with other students, use computers, and use the collection of instructional resources.
   
• Future Teachers Association sponsors social and educational activities for students in the Teacher Education Department.

Career Outlook:
Many teaching jobs are expected to open across the country as older teachers retire. Some states, such as California, Texas and Florida, already are facing teacher shortages. Teachers also can move into other educational positions such as school librarians, reading specialists, curriculum specialists, guidance counselors or deans. Administrative positions are another career option, usually after several years of experience and completion of at least one graduate degree.
