
Broad Field Social Studies
Printable version of this fact sheetBroad Field Social Studies is a comprehensive liberal arts major. It is open to everyone, but generally is used by students planning to pursue a career in teaching social studies at the high school level. It includes course work in Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Students who plan to become teachers must also complete the Wisconsin teacher certification requirements through the university's Teacher Education Department.

· Excellent major for secondary education students planning to teach in the social studies field.
· Certification to teach "fusion courses" will be granted upon the completion of the Broad Field Social Studies program. Fusion courses are classes that integrate many social studies disciplines such as civics, social problems, American problems, area studies and vital issues.
· Complete the major in one of two ways. Option one: choose a secondary education major in history, political science, psychology or sociology and complete the required courses in the broadfield social studies major. Option two: pursue a secondary education minor in political science, complete the required courses and take additional elective credits in any one of the other disciplines within the broad field major.
· Small classes allow personal attention from professors.
· Majors in this field benefit from UW-Superior's excellent programs in teacher education and the social sciences.
Career Outlook:
Many teaching jobs are expected to open across the country as older teachers retire. Some states, such as California, Texas and Florida, already are facing teacher shortages.We invite you to visit:
