Legal Studies
Printable version of this fact sheet

The Legal Studies program provides an undergraduate Legal Studies major grounded in the humanist tradition of law, the primary focus of which is the study of law in its relations to politics, society and history. The Legal Studies program goes beyond what constitutes law and explores the mutual impacts of law and society. Moreover, the major encourages students to examine political influences, historical patterns, economic relations and the moral, philosophical and ethical foundations, and implications of law.

Legal Studies is in an academic partnership with UW-Superior's Criminal Justice program, offering a Legal Studies major with a Criminal Justice Concentration. Criminal Justice offers a social science perspective on the law which complements and supplements the humanist perspective of Legal Studies.

The Legal Studies program also collaborates with UW-Superior's Center for Continuing Education and Extension on paralegal and mediation/conflict resolution certificate programs. Students who are seeking degrees may also complete certificate requirements as part of their elective credits toward degree. Students not seeking a degree may complete the certificates through the Center for Continuing Education and Extension.

The Legal Studies minor and Criminal Justice minor are excellent complements to majors such as business, sociology, psychology and history.

UW-Superior assembled the Legal Studies major in consultation with legal scholars and professionals, and it is the first of its design in Wisconsin. The major is excellent preparation for students seeking careers in areas such as law, mediation, alternative dispute resolution, the news media, government, and business. It's also excellent preparation of law school or graduate school.

Although Legal Studies is a relatively new program, having been established in 1997, its graduates already have compiled an impressive record of gaining admission to law school and launching careers in government, law enforcement, business and other fields.

The Criminal Justice Concentration has a long and outstanding record of student success. Graduates of this program are pursuing successful careers across the country in law, law enforcement, corrections and related fields.
