Teacher Education -- Secondary Education Certification
Printable version of this fact sheetUW-Superior's Teacher Education Department offers a secondary education certification program that prepares students to teach middle school and high school in subjects such as biology, chemistry, physical education, health, psychology, German, Spanish, computer science, mathematics, music, art, political science, history and sociology. Students also can use this program to prepare to teach pupils from early childhood through the adolescent level in the special areas of physical education, art and music.
Secondary education certification students complete a major or minor in the academic subject in which they wish to teach. They also complete a selection of professional education courses to gain classroom skills and experience. Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Science degree, depending on the requirements of individual majors. UW-Superior also offers Broad Field Science Certification and Broad Field Social Studies Certification for students who wish to teach in those areas.
UW-Superior offers a challenging curriculum along with small class sizes, intensive interaction with faculty, and many opportunities to gain experience by working with children on campus and as a student teacher or teaching intern. The program prepares students for licensure in Wisconsin, and the degree is acceptable in many other states.

Program features:
- Students begin working with children early in their academic careers and have many opportunities to observe, tutor, and teach small and large groups before their student teaching experience.
- Students work closely with faculty members, all of whom have public school teaching experience.
- Each student has an academic advisor to offer guidance in selecting courses and choosing a minor or second major.
- Many UW-Superior scholarships are available for teacher education students.
- The COPE Center, located in McCaskill Hall, is an area where Teacher Education students can relax, study, share experiences with other students, use computers, and use the collection of instructional resources.
- Future Teachers Association sponsors social and educational activities for students in the Teacher Education Department.
Career Outlook:
Many teaching jobs are expected to open across the country as older teachers retire. Some states, such as California, Texas and Florida, already are facing teacher shortages. Teachers also can move into other educational positions such as school librarians, reading specialists, curriculum specialists, guidance counselors or deans. Administrative positions are another career option, usually after several years of experience and completion of at least one graduate degree.We invite you to visit:
