A Quick Guide To Majors and Minors
What are majors, minors and concentrations?
While you're enrolled at UW-Superior, you'll hear a lot about majors, minors and concentrations. Here's a quick guide to those terms:
Majors and concentrations
A major is a planned program of study -- accounting, for example -- in which you can focus your education. Many majors also offer "concentrations," which are areas in that program in which you can specialize. For instance, you can major in Business Administration with a concentration in finance, international business, management or marketing.
Each major has a set of required courses that you must complete. They also have a list of elective courses from which you can choose to round out your education, pursue areas of special interest and gain additional expertise. You can complete more than one major if you wish, but that may increase the number of course credits you need to graduate.
Some majors are listed as "comprehensive." That means they have enough course requirements so you don't have to complete a minor.
Minors
A minor is another planned program of study requiring fewer credits than a major. Some students choose a minor to develop their knowledge in an area they enjoy. Others choose a minor to enhance their career prospects.
