Hometown: Stillwater, MN

Major: Biology, Chemistry

Her professors: "I like the interaction here between faculty and students. The professors seem so friendly and easy to talk to. They know you by name; you can sit down and talk with them."

Her research: "I've worked for the Lake Superior Research Institute on campus as a lab assistant analyzing fish for mercury. I've been on the research team for the Caribbean Coral Reef Studies program. After my junior year I had a 10-week summer internship at the University of Hawaii-Manoa in Honolulu."

About 80 percent of UW-Superior students receive some type of financial aid. A lot of potential help is available if you invest a little time to understand all your options. Follow the links at the top of this page to learn more about different types of aid.

UW-Superior awarded more than $150,000 in new student scholarships to students enrolling in September 2006.

When you're ready to apply to UW-Superior, you can get more details about financial aid from our Financial Aid Office website or you can apply using the FAFSA -- the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Financial aid is a broad term covering many federal, state and campus programs.  Here are the main types of aid:

Grants - Cash award to qualifying students. Often based on financial need. You do not repay a grant.

Loans - Money borrowed by you or your parents that is paid to the university. Loans must be paid back with interest after you graduate.

Scholarships - Cash awards paid to you or sent directly to the university. You may receive a scholarship through UW-Superior or on your own from sources such as civic groups or veterans' organizations. Scholarships do not have to be repaid.

Employment - "Work Study" and "Student Assist" programs enable you to earn money by working at jobs on campus.

Tuition Waiver - Reduces out-of-state tuition to the lower rate paid by Wisconsin residents.

Reciprocity - An agreement that enables Minnesota residents to attend UW-Superior and pay the same tuition rate they would pay as a Minnesota resident attending the Minnesota State University System.
