How safe is UW-Superior?
UW-Superior is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. Walkways and parking lots are well-lighted and equipped with emergency telephones linked directly to our Campus Safety Office. Campus safety officers are on duty around the clock and will escort students whenever requested. To view our Clery Act Campus Crime Report, visit our Campus Safety Office web site.
I'm picking up the tab for my student. How do I know I'm paying on time?
Upon enrolling, your student should receive a fee payment schedule. If you don't have a schedule, you can get one from the Cashier's Office in Old Main, Room 208, or by calling (715) 394-8505.
How can we learn more about financial aid?
Start by visiting our Financial Aid website. When you arrange a visit to campus, ask the Admissions Office to schedule you to meet with someone from our Financial Aid Office.
Should my son or daughter live in a residence hall?
Most freshmen and sophomore students are required to live in a residence hall. The Admissions Office can tell you whether your son or daughter is exempt from that requirement.
Generally, we encourage new students to live in a university residence hall. Research shows that students who live in residence halls feel more connected to their university and have a higher success rate than new students living off campus.
Our Residence Life website can answer your questions about student housing.
Should my student bring a car?
All students are permitted to have a car on campus. A university parking permit must be purchased to park in campus lots. (State law requires that our parking lots be self-supporting. So we must charge for parking passes to pay the cost of maintaining the lots.)
Some new students don't bring cars to campus. In Superior, a lot of things -- banks, supermarkets, stores and several churches -- are within easy walking distance of campus. To go farther afield, such as to the mall, many students use the Duluth Transit Authority buses. DTA bus stops are located along Catlin Avenue, which runs through campus. For $1, a student can ride to any destination in Superior and Duluth from dawn until late evening.
Are there computers on campus for my student to use?
Yes, we have about 200 computers available throughout campus for students to use. All major academic buildings have a student computer lab, with the largest being in Old Main, Jim Dan Hill Library and the Health & Wellness Center. Each year we use money generated by the Student Technology Fee to buy new computers and software for these labs. We replace one-third of our lab computers each year, so no lab computer is more than three years old. In addition, each residence hall has a computer lab that's available to hall residents 24 hours a day.
Students are welcome to bring their own desktop or laptop computers to campus. Every residence hall room is equipped with two ports that link to our campus network and the Internet. Our campus also has a growing wireless network.
What if my son or daughter has special dietary needs?
Contact our food service office in Rothwell Student Center. The staff will be glad to create a special diet that meets requirements set by your family doctor.
