Terms to know

Here is a brief guide to some terms you may encounter when assisting your student.

Academic Calendar - The Academic Calendar is the university's official calendar, listing the days classes begin and end, holidays and important deadlines for paying fees and registering for classes.

Billing - Bills will be sent to the student's permanent address, which is usually a student's home address. Please realize that students (not parents) are legally responsible for their student accounts.

Campus Safety - The Campus Safety Office provides assistance to students, faculty and staff on campus. Its primary function is to provide basic security, assist in crime investigations, disturbances or accidents, develop crime awareness programs and patrol the campus buildings and grounds. A security officer will escort a student to a car or building upon request.

Catalog - The University Catalog (some people may call it a "bulletin") contains important academic information, including a complete list of courses with brief descriptions; information about requirements for majors; graduation requirements; and the grading system. The catalog is given to students during SMART Start and should be kept for the entire time the student is at UW-Superior. It also is available on the UW-Superior web site at http://www.uwsuper.edu/catalog/undergraduate/

Drop/Add - Students may adjust their course schedules on or before the dates indicated in the Academic Calendar. A change in program is official only when the Drop/Add has been processed by the Registrar's Office. Of course, only courses which have space available can be added. However, students may approach instructors for permission to enroll in a closed course.

E-Hive - My E-Hive is a computer portal students use to register for classes, obtain their grades, change their address, and perform other business functions with the university. It is accessible through the My E-Hive icon on the UW-Superior web site. Students receive My E-Hive login information once they are accepted for enrollment.

E-mail - Each student is automatically assigned a university e-mail account with a university e-mail address. This address is the student's official university e-mail address. It is the only e-mail address to which the university and its professors will send notices, messages and other important information. Students should regularly check their account for messages.

Emergency Phones - Emergency telephones are located throughout campus. They are mounted on brown pylons topped by blue lights. Pushing the button on an emergency telephone connects the user to the Campus Safety Office and activates the revolving blue light atop the pylon.

Full-Time Student - Any student registered for 12 or more credits during a semester is considered to be a full-time student. An average credit load is 15-18 credits. Students who are on financial aid must be careful not to drop below 12 credits or they may jeopardize their eligibility.

GPA - Grade Point Average. A semester GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of points earned per credit by the number of credit hours attempted in a semester. A cumulative GPA is figured the same way, using totals from all semester at UW-Superior.

Grades - Students access their grades through the My E-Hive icon on the UW-Superior web site.

New Student Orientation - We offer our New Student Orientation program in late August for any student who is new to UW-Superior. It's very important that new students attend the orientation sessions so they can become familiar with the campus and its services before classes begin. This is the best time to receive training for the My E-Hive portal.

Residence Requirement - University of Wisconsin System policy requires a student to live on campus their first two years unless he or she meets one of the following criteria: married; a parent; a military veteran; lives with parents or guardian within 35 miles of Superior; has completed four semesters of college; graduated from high school two or more years ago; has lived in university housing for two academic years; or turned 20 before the beginning of the fall semester.

SMART Start - New freshmen accepted for the fall semester are eligible to participate in our summer SMART Start program. SMART Start provides an opportunity for students to meet with a faculty advisor, register early for classes, and learn how to use the university's E-Hive student information system. These daylong sessions are offered several times in June and July. Students eligible to participate in SMART Start will receive letters and registration forms from our Admissions Office beginning in mid-May. It's very important that new freshman attend a SMART Start session.

Withdrawal - If a student should decide to officially withdraw from the University, it is his or her responsibility to initiate and complete the process with the Registrars Office. When a student withdraws from a class after the drop/add date, a "W" will appear on their transcript and there is no effect on the GPA.
