Ted Whereatt
Inducted: 1963
Recipient of the Mertz Mortorelli Coaching Achievement Award
Ted Whereatt joined the UW-Superior faculty in 1930 and quickly established a strong reputation for the school's athletic program. Under his guidance, the Superior State Teachers College football team won five state conference titles between 1931 and 1937. During the 1936 and 1937 seasons, the team did not surrender a single point to its opponents. Coach Whereatt's basketball teams
often played against much larger opponents, such as the University of Nebraska and the University of North Dakota. The squad was so successful that it earned an invitation to the 1940 NCAA tournament in Kansas City.
Coach Whereatt, a native of Superior, left the faculty in 1948 to join the staff
of the University of Indiana.
