Cathy Kretsch Vesel Schneider

Cathy Kretsch Vesel Schneider of Rochester, Minn., was one of UW-Superior's top women athletes during the 1980s, turning in stellar performances in gymnastics, softball and volleyball.

Ms. Schneider was a three-time All-American gymnast and a four-time member of the WWIAC All-Conference Gymnastics Team. She was named UW-Superior's Outstanding Gymnast from 1987 to 1989, and was an Academic All-American in gymnastics for 1989.

As a softball player, Ms. Schneider was named the university's Player of the Year in 1986. The following year she was named to the NAIA All-District 14 team. In volleyball, she led the WWIAC in digs.

Ms. Schneider's other awards included being named UW-Superior's Most Inspirational Woman Athlete in 1987 and Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 1989. On four occasions she was named the WWIAC's Athlete of the Week.

After graduating, Ms. Schneider continued to play competitive softball. She was a member of several top teams, including the 1999 Women's ASA Class A Softball National Champions from Rochester, Minn., and the six-time ASA State Coed Champions from Elba, Minn. In addition, she served as head volleyball coach for Plainview (Minn.) high school in 1995 and 1996, and as head softball coach from 1994 to 1999.
