Peter Susens was a four-year letterwinner for the Yellowjacket baseball team from 1972-76, capturing an all-conference honor in 1975 and graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and business education. With a coaching career that started during his time at UW-Superior, Mr. Susens began mentoring young athletes in 1974 and today, 36 years later, is still having an impact. For his accomplishments, Mr. Susens is a 2010 recipient of the Mertz Mortorelli Coaching Achievement Award.
While still competing for the Yellowjackets, Mr. Susens coached youth hockey with the Superior Amateur Hockey Association at the squirt and pee wee levels. His Superior Blues claimed the state championship in 1974 and advanced to the national tournament. Upon his graduation, Mr. Susens began teaching and coaching at
Mr. Susens was the freshman baseball coach for two years, junior varsity baseball coach for three years and the varsity baseball coach for two years at WWHS. In 1983, his varsity team went 22-11, winning a conference championship. After a hiatus, Mr. Susens returned to coaching baseball in 1998 and today serves as an assistant coach with the WWHS varsity.
It's on the ice, however, where Mr. Susens has made his most indelible coaching mark. In 30 years as a head coach at WWHS, Mr. Susens has crafted a record of 447-200-21. His teams have won six conference championships and advanced to the state tournament on nine occasions. He has helped over 80 players receive all-conference honors, and three who have been named conference player of the year.
Away from high school hockey, Mr. Susens has received the highest level of coaching certification from USA Hockey and has worked numerous camps and clinics at the state and national levels.
