Arthur Art Nelson

Arthur "Art" Nelson was an outstanding athlete at UW-Superior from 1961 to 1963, leading the Yellowjacket basketball team during one of its most successful seasons.

A noted high school athlete in Superior, Mr. Nelson enrolled at UW-Superior in 1960 and earned the role of starting defensive back for the Yellowjacket football team. He truly made his mark, however, in basketball. During the 1960-'61 season, he served as the team's co-captain as its members compiled a 15-6 record that put them second in the Wisconsin State College Conference. Mr. Nelson finished fourth in the conference in scoring with 19.1 points per game. He was a first team All-Conference selection as well as a first-team selection for the Collegiate All State Basketball Team. The Yellowjackets were chosen to compete in the Mid West Regional NCAA Tournament, in which Mr. Nelson was named to the All-Tournament Team.

During the 1961-62 season, Mr. Nelson again was named co-captain of the basketball team. Despite missing part of the season with a broken arm, he led the team in scoring average, was among the leading scorers in the conference, and was named to the All-Conference team.
