Induction Year: 1998

Joyce Spehar

Joyce Spehar is a 1978 graduate of UW-Superior. While at UW-Superior, she participated in volleyball, where she was named All-Conference 1976-1978 and recognized as a team captain 1974-1978. She also was captain of the track team from 1975 to 1977, where during her final season she was named Most Valuable Women's Track Athlete.

Since her graduation Ms. Spehar has spent the past 20 years teaching physical education/health and coaching in both the Superior, Wis., and Anoka Hennepin school districts. She is presently at Evergreen Park elementary school. "Teaching has been a very rewarding profession," she said.

In addition to her teaching position, Ms. Spehar is a member of the building leadership team; she has served on a panel for the selection of the school's principal and the hiring of many other teachers. She had spent her time teaching after school sports, facilitating at-risk student groups and she has helped to start an all-school peace program. As if this has not been enough she has been involved in many committees at the school and district levels.

Away from the court and out of the classroom Ms. Spehar works with Loaves & Fishes, a church program to help feed those in need. She is also co-chair for the National Night Out committee in her community.
