Mike Sullivan, Class of 2009, and other members of the musical group Pipestone were named Group of the Year during this year's Native American Music Awards ceremony held Oct. 7 in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Pipestone, a drum group from Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation near Hayward, Wis., was nominated for three awards. It won for the group's recording "As the Rez Turns."

Sullivan, from Stone Lake, Wis., majored in sociology at UW-Superior and is now pursuing a doctorate degree in linguistics at the University of Minnesota.

Pipestone received a Nammy in 2007 for its CD "Good Ol' Fashioned NDN Lovin' "
