Over 60 UW-Superior students and staff gathered for a dinner on Wednesday, April 17 to celebrate the academic year for Swenson Scholarship recipients, and to pay tribute to Jim and Sue Swenson of the Swenson Family Foundation.
The Swenson Scholarships were established by Jim and Sue in 1994 to aid students who meet the requirements of high academic talent and financial need, and majoring in biology, chemistry, or mathematics. Swenson Scholarships pay for full tuition, fees and books, and may be renewed for up to three additional years by eligible students. The scholarships are offered through the University of Wisconsin-Superior Foundation Inc., a private foundation supporting scholarships, faculty and programs at UW-Superior. Since 1994, the Foundation has awarded 670 Swenson Scholarships.
"Through their tremendous generosity, Jim and Sue Swenson have given students the greatest gift of all - the opportunity to invest in themselves through their education. It is a gift that goes beyond the immediate financial dollars and will have a ripple effect across many generations to come," said Chancellor Renee Wachter.
Jim and Sue feel blessed to be able to help students fulfill a dream to obtain a college degree - many of whom would not be able to without the Swenson Scholarship.
"We are so grateful to play a small role in so many students' successes. They have a dream with a road block. Remove the road block and they flourish. There is no greater satisfaction in life. We get to feel the reward as students expand their horizons," said Sue Swenson.
