The new student center features an exciting, modern design that will aid in recruiting new students and make it more appealing and useful to current students. It also will feature greater energy efficiency, more efficient use of space and be easier to navigate. Its environmentally friendly “green roof” will be covered with plants that absorb heat and rainwater, with excess rainwater directed into a special garden to avoid contributing to storm runoff. Read more about this project and see images of how the finished building will appear.

You can see a live view of this project site through our new Construction Cam.

We'll add photos to this site every week until the project is finished. Please check back to watch the progress.

May 2008 - Work already is well under way to excavate a basement for the new building. The basement will be used for mechanical space, storage and some student organization offices.

May 2008 -- Another view showing the basement excavation, with Old Main in the background.

May 30, 2008 -- Excavation work continues on the site of the new student center, which is immediately in front of Rothwell Student Center, seen here in the background.

June 9, 2008 - Foundation footings for the student center begin to take shape, and workers prepare more forms for the next pouring of concrete.

June 18, 2008 - The building's foundation and basement continues to take shape. Workers at far left and far right are installing steel reinforcement bars that will become part of the building's concrete foundation.

July 7, 2008 - Workers install concrete forms and reinforcement bar in preparation for pouring the concrete basement walls. A completed portion of the wall can be seen at far left.

July 14, 2008 - The concrete basement walls continue to take shape.

July 22, 2008 - Foundation work continues to progress.

July 28, 2008 -- Forms go up for the remaining portion of the foundation wall.

Aug. 14, 2008 - This view shows the completed concrete basement of the building's east end. Beyond that is the footprint for the remainder of the building.

Aug. 20, 2008 -- Work on the foundation extends to the west while workers in the basement prepare the ground for pouring the concrete floor.

Aug. 20, 2008 - This is how the building site appears from ground level to someone looking from Barstow Hall toward Rothwell Student Center.

Aug. 27, 2008 - The basement floor has been poured (foreground) and the foundation of the remainder of the building (background) is nearly finished being poured.

Sept. 3, 2008 - Foundation work continues as fall semester begins.

Sept. 10, 2008 - Masons build cement block walls inside the basement while in the background, the curved front of the building takes shape.

Sept. 17, 2008 -- Masons are completing the concrete block interior walls inside the basement (left side of the photo). In the background you can see workers are compacting soil in preparation for pouring the concrete for the building's main floor.

Sept. 24, 2008 -- Following a day of heavy rain, everyone is busy. At left, ironworkers are erecting structural steel while in the background more concrete is being pouried.

Sept. 24, 2008 -- A closer view of the first structural steel being erected for the student center's shell.

Sept. 25, 2008 -- What a difference a day makes! Workers are quickly erecting the building's steel skeleton. Compare this photo to the previous photo taken 24 hours earlier.

Sept. 25, 2008 -- A crane lifts a girder into place in the frame of the new student center.

Sept. 25, 2008 -- Workers fasten a girder in place on the new student center.

Oct. 3, 2008 -- Ironworkers continue to erect the building's steel frame. To the right in this view, concrete work and site preparation continue. More girders remain on the site waiting to be put in place, and more steel is being fabricated for the project.

Oct. 8, 2008 -- Ironworkers add another girder to the frame of the student center. To the right in this photo, you can see more girders have been added across the site.

Oct. 15, 2008 -- The building's steel frame continues to grow. Steel flooring, visible at lower left, is being installed over the basement areas. Out of sight to the right, a concrete entryway has been built.

Oct. 29, 2008 -- A significant portion of the steel frame has been erected. At left, workers have poured concrete over the steel sub-flooring on the first floor and installed steel sub-flooring on the second floor and steel roofing for the outdoor area at far left. In the center, workers are building a concrete block shaft to house an elevator. The building is expected to be enclosed by the end of December.

Nov. 5, 2008 -- Earlier this week trucks began delivering roof trusses to the site. Some already have been installed in this section of the building. The concrete block structure is a stair well..

Nov. 5, 2008 -- The photo, taken from Barstow Hall, shows the curving front of the student center that will face Old Main. The large, slanted beams will support the sloping "green roof" that will absorb rainwater and deliver any excess to a small garden.

Nov. 11, 2008 -- Although structural steel remains to be erected, emphasis is now shifting to masonry work. Loads of concrete blocks are arriving on the site. Workers are beginning to erect scaffolding around this part of the building so they can begin to enclose it with masonry.

Nov. 11, 2008 -- Workers have enclosed this area in plastic so they can build an internal masonry wall under climate-controlled conditions. Structural steel eventually will be erected around the area of the building.

Nov. 19, 2008 -- Workers this week resumed erecting  structural steel and continued building masonry walls. This view shows the steel sub-flooring that's been installed on the second floor.

Nov. 19, 2008 -- On the north side of the building, work is proceeding on erecting the last of the structural steel and building an interior masonry wall.
