Men's Soccer

Men's Soccer PictureThe UW-Superior Men’s Soccer team competes against both public and private universities in Wisconsin and Minnesota, as well as other schools throughout the Midwest. In 2009, the Jackets will compete in the WIAC as men’s soccer will be added as an official WIAC sport.

In 2008, the UWS men posted a 9-9 record, improving on their 2007 6-8-1 record. They did so in the midst of a transitional phase, as they were led by Coach Joe Mooney in his first year with the program. Additionally, the Yellowjackets will reopen their new soccer field behind Ross Hall for competition beginning in the fall of 2009.

UW-Superior offers a wide range of academic programs related to athletics and fitness. You’ll find programs in physical education, exercise science, health, community health promotion, and corporate health management. We also offer outstanding academic programs in teacher education, science, business, computers and other fields.

Coach’s Profile:

Joe Mooney, an alumnus of UW-Superior, begins his first season as the head coach of the Yellowjackets’ men’s soccer team in August. Mooney served as a volunteer assistant coach for UWS in 2007. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Spooner-Shell Lake (WI) High School girls’ team for two years. He was also an assistant for the Spooner-Shell Lake boys’ team for five years.

As a player at UWS, Mooney was a four-year starter and three-year captain. He also spent three months in 2003 playing with the Newtongrange Star, a Division I professional team in Newtongrange, Scotland.

Mooney earned his bachelor’s degree from UW-Superior in 2006 with a Broadfield Social Studies Education major. He also holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “D” coaching license.

Mooney, 25, inherits a team that was 6-8-1 last year. “Our immediate goal is to continue to build a program that is highly competitive on the field while reflecting the overall commitment of the university and the athletic department to providing a high quality educational experience for its students,” says Mooney.
