About:
On March 27, 2006 the University of Wisconsin-Superior found its long-term men’s head basketball coach in Dave Buchanan. Buchanan spent his previous seasons as the top assistant at Division II UW-Parkside.
A Watertown, Wis., native, Buchanan played college basketball at UW-La Crosse, where he graduated in 1995. While at La Crosse, Buchanan was awarded team captain in 1994 and 1995, and named team MVP in 1995. Buchanan currently ranks in the all-time leaders at UW-L in 3pt baskets made in a season and career.
His first coaching stint was a five-year stop at Greenfield (Wis.) High School from 1997-2002. In his 2nd season at Greenfield, Buchanan led the Hawks to their 1st Woodland Conference Championship in 31 years. In addition, Buchanan was named CNI Newspapers Area Coach of the Year in 2002.
Following 5 years at Greenfield, Buchanan guided Brookfield East High School for one season. In his lone season leading the Spartans, East doubled their previous season win total, and advanced to the regional championship before falling in double overtime.
At UW-Parkside, Buchanan served as recruiting coordinator of a prized recruiting class in his first season as assistant. In his second season, Parkside celebrated a victory over NCAA Division I Illinois-Chicago, and qualified for the Great Lakes Valley Conference for only the third time in school history. In the 2005-06 campaign, UW-Parkside recorded it highest victory total (15) in 18 years, defeated eventual national champion Winona State at home, and qualified for the GLVC tournament for the fourth time in school history.
Buchanan, 35, inherited a program that finished 5-20 overall and 0-16 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the 2005-06 season. In his first year he helped bring the Yellowjackets to a 7-18 record. The Yellowjackets found big wins against Bemidji State and WIAC opponents, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Platteville. He says his goals for this year are to "improve his home record and establish Superior as one of the toughest places to play in the entire WIAC."
Buchanan, committed to building a championship-level program, focused his recruiting efforts on Wisconsin. And he is anticipating big results from those efforts. He states, "I have been very pleased with the transition our new recruits have made, and I think each and every one of them brings something special to the table. There is no question that Dan Culy (Rice Lake, WI) and Ray Byrns (Black River Falls, WI) will add perimeter scoring punch, and that Shane Manor (Altoona, WI), Greg Roeder (Mercer, WI), Jake Smith (Rhinelander, WI), and Ben Lindberg (Superior, WI) will improve our athleticism and front line depth. The future of this group is very bright."
