The 2009-2010 season will be the tenth season the Yellowjackets will be guided by Dan Stauber. Stauber took the reins of the program when Steve Nelson resigned in August 2000. From there Stauber took over and cemented his legacy within his first two years, winning everything possible including a national title. He reached the 100-win mark faster than any other coach in UW-Superior history. Plain and simple, Stauber is a winner and his teams win games.

In the first six years of Stauber's tenure, the Yellowjackets have set numerous records. There was the 23-game unbeaten streak and 19-game winning streak in the first season, the same season the 'Jackets won 30 games, the NCHA title and the NCHA playoff title. In the second season, there came the first of three straight WIAC championships, the last of three straight NCHA playoff titles, and the school's second national championship. There was also the 2004-05 season where the 'Jackets set a school mark for fewest losses in a season with three. There has been an unbeaten streak of at least seven games in each of his five seasons.

However, with team success comes individual success for players and coach alike. Stauber has seen 20 players named All-NCHA, 24 named All-WIAC, and 14 named All-American. He also coached NCHA Player of the Year Mike Wiggins in 2004-05, and Chad Beiswenger in 2008-09.  On the academic side, 35 players have been named NCHA All-Academic, and four (Nate Ziemski, Kyle Nosan, Baron Bradley, Dustin Cosgrove) have been named WIAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. Stauber was named NCHA Coach of the Year in 2001 and Division III Coach of the Year in 2002.

Stauber's coaching career began at NCHA rival UW-Eau Claire. Under the tutelage of former Division I and NHL coach Troy Ward, Stauber helped the Blugolds to an overall record of 18-14-2 and a second place NCHA finish, the winningest season in Blugold hockey history. From there, Stauber became the head coach at Waupaca (Wis.) High School. After three years he returned to his alma mater of Duluth Denfeld High School and guided the Hunters for three seasons before joining Steve Nelson's staff full time in 1998. In recent years, Stauber has expanded his coaching resume to include several USA Hockey Select Team festivals. Stauber is also active in coaching at the youth level as a member of the Hermantown Amateur Hockey Association.

As a player, Stauber starred at Duluth Denfeld High School before embarking on a four-year playing career at UW-Superior. In those four years, Stauber appeared in 99 games, scoring 47 goals and 71 assists for 118 points. Stauber was a team captain during his final two years and led his team in scoring twice. Stauber also played one professional season in Boras, Sweden, before jumping into coaching.

Coaching is only part of the picture for Stauber at UW-Superior. In addition to his coaching duties, Stauber also serves in a marketing and fundraising capacity for the UW-Superior Foundation. Stauber is married to the former Julie Sundstrom (her brother Tim was a player and coach at UW-Superior in the 1980s) and they reside in Hermantown with their three children Nora (17), Owen (15) and Natalie (13).
