Roger Plachta will start his sixth season as Yellowjacket head coach. In his previous five seasons, Plachta has amassed a record of 113 wins-more wins than any women’s coach in Yellowjacket history. His teams have set 51 team records, a WIAC Western Division Championship (2001), a WIAC Tournament Championship (2002), and two NCAA Regional Tournament Appearances in the past four years. Coach Plachta was named WIAC Coach of the Year in 2002. He has also coached eleven WIAC first team All-Conference players and five WIAC Honorable Mention players. He has also coached six All-Great Lakes Region Players and Two National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Americans.

Coach Plachta is well-known both as a player and a coach. As a player, Roger played on a National Championship team in 1994 for Croix Valley Glass out of Stillwater, Minn. His Interstate Spur team finished runner-up at the 1998 ASA National in Sioux Falls, S.D. Overall, Roger had the opportunity to play in eleven National Tournaments and three World Tournaments. He also played on nine State Championship teams. In 1991 and 1994 Roger was named First Team All-American while playing for Interstate Spur and Croix Valley Glass.

Roger started his coaching career at UW-Superior, from 1982 – 1985, he was an assistant coach to Dom Moselle and the Yellowjacket baseball program whom Roger had played for in 1980. He also assisted Dr. Russ Smiley with the UW-Superior Softball team 1982-1985. Roger took over the Esko High School Softball Program in 1987 were he was voted Region coach of the year six times. Roger won 260 games at Esko, losing 64. The Eskomos won 12 Conference Championships in 16 years, 5 Region Championships and had 5 trips to the State Tournament, capturing the Minnesota State Championship in 1998. They took second in 1996, fourth in 1993, fifth in 1999 and seventh in 1987. In 1999, Roger took over the coaching position at Superior High School for one season. Roger coached two High School All-Americans, Danni Catanzirite and Nikki Flynn. In 1995, Roger won the National Girls and Women in Sports Award for breaking barriers and expanding boundaries in women’s sports. He was also a finalist for the award in 2001. Roger started the Esko Ice Summer Program where his team is always one of the top teams in Minnesota.

Roger is a native of Superior and a graduate of Superior High School. He attended UW-Superior in 1979 and played baseball for the Yellowjackets. He and his wife Linda have been married for 25 years and have three children Eric, Jamie and Sarah.
