UW-Superior Student Tax Reporting Information for 2007

Attention Taxpayers - Taxpayer Relief Act Implications for Tuition Payments

The Federal Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 enacted certain tax incentives for post secondary educational expenses. Some taxpayers may be eligible to claim a tax credit against their federal income taxes for qualified tuition paid for EACH student in the taxpayer's family (i.e., the taxpayer, taxpayer's spouse, and eligible dependents) in the 2007 tax year.

1098-T Statements

UW-Superior is filing 1098-T statements for 2007 using the amounts billed reporting option outlined by the IRS. The amounts provided indicate qualified tuition amounts billed during the calendar year. There is no statement on behalf of the University that the student actually paid the amounts indicated. Students with qualifying tuition and related expenses during 2007 should receive a 1098-T statement by February 1, 2007. The provisions of the Federal Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 create several tax benefits for families who are paying higher education costs. Whether you can actually take advantage of these benefits depends on your individual facts and circumstances.

Once you have accessed the E-Hive system locate the "Finances" area and click on the "View Bill" link. Choose the appropriate semester(s) for your 2007 tax reporting. View the semester billing statement (example: Fall Semester 2007) and choose the "Click here to view your account detail" link.
