News and Events Details
This past weekend 24 students and about a dozen faculty and staff gave up their time to attend the 1st Annual Diversity Leadership Retreat held at Camp Amnicon in South Range, WI. The retreat was held off campus to give the group a chance to really focus on the topics and not be distracted by their surroundings. "It was great to see how cohesive this group became by the end" states Acacia Nikoi, Multicultural Student Services Coordinator at UW-Superior . The weekend was focused on a number of different topics that work with leadership.
The group started by breaking down diversity and multiculturalism and really talking about what those words or ideas really meant. With the focus on leadership, the group addressed defining what is 'leadership'. "Leadership is not a position or title" says Nikoi. Students learned that they can be leaders, not matter what position they hold in an organization.
The group was also challenged with looking at the idea of cultural leadership. Leadership does not always look the same across cultures and those differences can be better utilized once they are identified and discussed. The use of communication and words also played a large role in the discussion of cultural leadership, as words and phrases can mean very different things depending on the culture. In addition the group addressed some other topics including networking and public speaking. "This was an amazing group of students to work with" notes Nikoi after the weekend.
The first year has been a success and the event is planned to continue again next year.
