For more than 12 years, the Department of Student Involvement and the Campus Volunteer Group (CVG) have coordinated efforts to help UW-Superior and WITC students with children make the holiday season brighter by providing gifts.

The Giving Tree allows UWS and WITC students to fill out an application packet indicating their child(ren) gift desires for the holidays. Once this application packet was complete, ornaments are hung on the tree located in the Shippar Atrium in the Yellowjacket Union. These ornaments have confidential information on them corresponding with the children and families in need. Any student, faculty, staff member or Superior community member can pick out an ornament and bring it to the YU Info Desk. The staff there will give the purchaser information on what to buy for the child. Purchasers return the gift to the YU desk and parents pick them up between December 16-22nd in time for the holidays.

As expected with the economic downturn, numbers of students and families with needs have increased dramatically. Nikki Ollig, Volunteerism & Service Intern for Student Involvement , says that over 100 children will be helped this year by the Giving Tree. That is over twice the number of children served by the program last year. The numbers of children and families have steadily increased since the programs inception years ago.

Please take the time out of your schedule and a few dollars from your budget this season to help provide gifts to the children of our UWS and WITC family. The tree was put up over the weekend and will remain in the YU through the holiday season for viewing and assistance. Your donation and assistance will make the holidays brighter for our children and our students. For more information, please contact Nikki Ollig or Ann Miller, Student Leadership Coordinator.
