Campus Life Spotlight: A’viands: It’s What’s for Dinner!

Posted on Mar 8, 2011

Since moving into the Yellowjacket Union, A'viands Dining Service has been developing a lot of new ideas and listening to the student body to improve their food options.  A'viands, a  food service company based out of Roseville, Minnesota, won the bid for the UWS dining contract several years ago.  A'viands prides itself on its sustainability efforts, which can be seen in many facets of the UWS dining operation.  From being a trayless dining center in the YU Café, to serving Alakef shade-grown, fair trade coffee from Duluth at Jacket Java, to composting all food and paper waste, A'viands provides a lot of opportunities for students to eat well and be green at the same time.

With the change in facilities from the Rothwell Student Center to the Yellowjacket Union, also have come changes in the options available to customers.   With three different options (YU Café, Jacket Java, and Brick Oven Grille), students, faculty, and staff can enjoy a quick bite on the go from Jacket Java, a warm meal to go from Brick Oven Grille, or a longer meal with friends and colleagues in the Café.

New this semester is A'viands website, which hosts daily menus, seasonal specials, and special events.   Currently, the seasonal special (available for two months only) is a delicious Florentine Flatbread pizza with tomatoes, artichokes, spinach and garlic cream cheese.   The online daily menus allow people to view their food choices and make informed decisions from their residence hall room or faculty office before they come over to enjoy a meal.  Customers can also "like" A'viands on Facebook to receive updates on events, food, and specials.

Along with the commitment to sustainability, A'viands also pushes to offer healthy options to customers.  With the Fit Choices 4 Life station, which is located in the YU Café by the sandwich line, offers three different options that are less than 400 calories each.  Nutritional information is posted for each item.  Just this week, Fit Choices 4 Life options include Mediterranean baked penne, Thai Chicken in cabbage leaves, Pad Thai, Chicken Gyro, and Indonesian Udon Noodle Stir Fry.

Not only does A'viands provide a delicious food operation to the hundreds of customers it serves daily, but A'viands is also expanding its catering options to the UWS community.  Just recently, A'viands catered the Woman of Color reception for Kym Young, visual arts graduate student, on March 1st.  Attendees to the reception enjoy delicious "one-bite" cheesecakes, mixed berry tarts, and peanut butter mousse brownie bites.

Come by the YU Café today for the Mardi Gras Madness menu, which will be all Cajun and Creole options all day, including a homemade King Cake!  A'viands accepts Jacket Cash, meal plans, cash, checks and credit cards and is open to all UWS community members (including Superior citizens).  Next time you're craving a delicious (and healthy!) bite to eat on campus, swing over the YU and enjoy A'viands!
