Diligence pays off: Nikki Ollig

Come winter, Nikki Ollig, a senior majoring in Accounting and International Business will start on her path towards career success in the Assurance Winter Internship program with McGladrey and Pullen, LLC, the fifth largest accounting firm in the nation.

Networking skills put to use

Ollig learned about this opportunity from Kathy Pykkonen's presentation in her Intermediate Accounting class. Among the things Pykkonen mentioned was some of the upcoming networking events in the area.

"McGladrey was having a casino night at Grandma's Sports Garden," says Ollig, "my friend and I were interested in going to see what it was about."

She feels that doing her research worked in her favor, and she cautions her peers to pay attention when people come and give talks in classrooms, attend networking events, and track social media sites such as Career Services and other departments on-campus.

"They know what opportunities are out there and some aren't always publicized."

Utilizing Career Services

Ollig is grateful for the help she received from Career Services. Apart from the advice she got in crafting a stellar resume, Career Services helped her find out about this opportunity.

"I feel that having heard about the opportunity from Kathy visiting our class was really helpful," she says, "Also, meeting and chatting with the employer and employees for the firm really gave great insight into what the position would entail."

Numerous opportunities at UW-Superior

Ollig will be graduating in May 2013, and as graduation draws closer, she is glad to have received the opportunities available both inside and outside the classroom at UW-Superior.

"If an opportunity is presented, take it and run with it," she advises, "it provides you with numerous skills that you gain and can use in the future."

"Jobs are everywhere," she adds, "and you need to be branding yourself as an individual. Give everything you do your best effort and never be afraid to ask questions."

We here at Career Services, congratulate Nikki and wish her the best in her internship.
