UW-Superior's Center for Academic Service-Learning invited its community and campus partners to the Yellowjacket Union on Jan. 31 to recognize their contributions to service-learning in Superior.
Representatives from participating community organizations along with university instructors were recognized by Academic Service-Learning Coordinator Jenice Meyer for their work with UW-Superior students. During the fall 2010 semester about 400 students took part in courses with a service-learning component.
Academic Service-Learning is an innovative teaching strategy that provides students with opportunities to deepen their knowledge and learn new skills by matching academic goals to the needs of community organizations or small businesses. Students in a service-learning course apply concepts and skills they learn in the classroom and give that knowledge back to the community. In return, they gain practical experience while serving others.
