Read to Children on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

When: Jan 20, 2014 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

I wanted to personally invite you to participate in this year's

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Monday, January 20th, 2014

The Superior Childhood Literacy Alliance (SCLA) in partnership with the Future Teacher's Association at UW-Superior is organizing this year's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. We are asking community volunteers to commit to one 30-minute reading time throughout the day on Monday, January 20th. This year's event will take place at various Superior School District elementary schools and Superior Community Preschools. Two age appropriate Dr. King books will be given to each community volunteer to gift to the classroom after he/she reads with the children.

We are organizing this event to honor Dr. King and the Superior School District's commitment to service. Dr. King is a symbol of justice, fairness, and equality. Locally, a prevalent inequality that exists is the early childhood literacy gap. Too many children in Douglas County, and nationwide, are not proficient in reading at their grade level by, or before, the 3rd grade.
