Interdisciplinary Studies (comprehensive) Major Description

The Individually Designed Major major is designed for Distance Learning students, who must have DL declared as their program and educational objectives, who cannot adequately be realized through an existing academic program offered through the Distance Learning Center.   

The major is designed by the student in consultation with an academic advisor and selected faculty. The approval process for the major includes the advisor, faculty panel members from the selected academic areas of study, the Associate Dean for Distance Learning, and the Credits & Reinstatement Committee.

Interdisciplinary Studies (comprehensive) Major Requirements

54 total major credits

This major may only be declared by Distance Learning students.

Major Requirements:

  1. A minimum of 3 different discipline areas must be chosen
  2. A minimum of 9 credits, maximum of 22 credits, in each discipline area
  3. A minimum of 18 credits must be in courses numbered 300 or higher
  4. Must complete IDS 300
  5. Must include a Capstone course
  6. Student must have earned at least 43 credits prior to submitting the IDS petition form
  7. Must submit (and have approved by the Credits and Student Reinstatement Committee) an Interdisciplinary Studies petition form.
  8. Must submit (and have approved by the Credits and Student Reinstatement Committee) an Interdisciplinary Studies petition form.
    • The petition form must be developed in consultation with the students adivisor and at least 3 faculty representing the 3 discipline areas chosen by the student.

Additional Degree Requirements:

  1. A minimum of 36 credits numbered 300 or higher
  2. A minimum of 30 credits earned at UW-Superior
  3. A resident GPA of at least 2.0 (UW-Superior courses only)
  4. A major GPA of at least 2.0 (all courses used to meet major requirements--including transfer courses)
  5. The last 12 credits for the major must be earned at UW-Superior
